Creature Commandos 1-2: A B-Grade Start for the DCU?
Okay, folks, I'm just gonna come out and say it: I'm not quite sure what to make of Creature Commandos so far. Is this really how James Gunn wanted to kick off his grand, revamped DC Universe (DCU)? It's a bizarre choice, to say the least.
I mean, let's be real, it's basically a Suicide Squad knock-off, right? We've got the same basic premise: a team of misfits forced to carry out dangerous missions for the government. The only difference is that this time, our "suicide squad" is made up of monsters and creatures.
Look, the first two episodes weren't terrible. They were… tolerable. But they certainly didn't leave me thinking, "Wow, this new DCU is going to blow everyone away!"
One thing's for sure: Gunn is clearly trying to distance himself from Zack Snyder's darker, more serious DCEU. Creature Commandos is definitely lighter in tone, but it's also trying to be edgy with its mature content. We're talking sex scenes, folks. In a superhero cartoon! Is that really necessary? To me, it just felt gratuitous and out of place. If I want mature animation, I'll stick with Invincible, thank you very much.
And speaking of mature, let's talk about the villains. We've got Circe trying to take over Themyscira with the help of a bunch of Proud Boy-esque goons. Gunn seems to love using this trope, and honestly, it's starting to feel a bit tired. Plus, the whole "incels as villains" thing feels a bit too close to The Batman and Riddler for my liking.
So far, Creature Commandos feels like a B-grade Suicide Squad with even less interesting characters. Not exactly the auspicious start I was hoping for from the DCU. Fingers crossed things pick up in the next few episodes.
