Dark Matter: A Mind-Bending Journey Through Alternate Realities
Review of the AppleTV+ streaming TV series
AppleTV+ continues to solidify its reputation for groundbreaking science fiction with "Dark Matter," a gripping adaptation of Blake Crouch's novel that, like "Constellation," dives into the captivating world of alternate realities.
The series hooks you immediately with its irresistible premise: a man, Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), is abducted into an alternate version of his life by his doppelganger, Jason2. As Jason1 grapples with this bewildering new reality, Jason2, driven by regret, takes over Jason1's life, including his wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and son. Jason2, a brilliant scientist, has invented the "Box," a device enabling travel between universes, and believes he's giving Jason1 a better life.
Jason1, however, is determined to return home and teams up with Jason2's lover Amanda (Alice Braga) to do so. Their journey through the Box becomes a perilous adventure, where each universe presents unique dangers.
Over nine episodes, we become deeply invested in Jason1's desperate struggle. The enormity of his task, the mysteries of the Box, and his own mental health challenges make for compelling viewing. We're also captivated by Jason2's deceitful charade as he assumes the role of husband and father, albeit with a narcissistic twist. The growing tension between Jason2 and Daniela, as she notices subtle inconsistencies, adds another layer of intrigue.
The series delivers a satisfying and logical conclusion, yet it leaves us pondering whether a second season is necessary. Are the loose threads about other characters traveling through the Box essential to resolve? Or is Jason1's fulfilled quest a satisfying enough ending? I'm torn, but if a second season can maintain the intensity and intrigue of these first nine episodes, it could be worthwhile.
Despite this lingering question, "Dark Matter" is a must-watch for science fiction fans. Its mind-bending premise, well-developed characters, and suspenseful plot will keep you hooked from start to finish.
